VA STATE INSPECTIONS

The Commonwealth of Virginia requires an annual safety inspection to operate vehicles registered in Virginia. The safety inspection checks various components of a vehicle to ensure they comply with state safety regulations.  Components that are checked during inspection include:

  • Tires & Wheels
  • Steering & Suspension
  • Lights & Electrical System
  • Glass & Mirrors
  • Exhaust System
  • Horn
  • Wipers & Defroster
  • Seatbelts
  • Airbags
  • Fuel System
  • Body & Frame

Virginia regulates the fees for inspections, effective July 1, 2019, the fees are as follows:

• $20 for most vehicles (cars, pickups, SUVs) including trailers and motor homes
• $12 for motorcycles and autocycles
• $51 for tractor trucks, large trucks, buses, or high capacity passenger vehicles
